Where do bad habits come from?
Bad habits became habits because the first few times we did, that behavior gave us a benefit. We established a positive reinforcer with that action that made us want to do it again.
Smoking – we were accepted by the cool kids.
Biting our fingernails – reduced stress and anxiety.
Taking recreational drugs – helped us escape.
Drinking too much – helped relaxation and made us feel more comfortable within ourselves.
As soon as we received the benefit, our unconscious mind locked it in as a ‘good’ thing to do. However, at some point, our lives/ lifestyles change, and now that habit is no longer beneficial to us.
How do I get rid of bad habits?
Consciously we are now aware of the downsides to the habit, but we can’t break free and stop the habit because our unconscious mind hasn’t been notified yet. We’re stuck in the vicious cycle of powerful positive reinforcements. We know that something is bad, but the benefit we get from it releases that momentary happiness which is so much easier than facing things head-on.
